The Challenge...

In early June of 2007 we will be attempting the three peaks challenge. The aim is to climb the highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales in twenty four hours. We are doing this challenge to raise money for Breast Cancer Care and also to raise awareness that men as well as women can be affected by breast cancer.

The challenge will start with Ben Nevis in Scotland. We will climb to the top and then back to the bottom, jump in the mini bus and drive 278 miles to Scarfell Pike in the Lake District, England. Up and down Scafell Pike, back in the mini bus and be off again to Snowdon in Wales 190 miles away. We will need to ascend and descend this mountain no later than twenty fours hours from our start in Scotland to complete the challenge successfully.

Ben Nevis, Scotland – The highest mountain in the challenge at 4409ft above sea level. We will be climbing Nevis using the ‘tourist route’ which, thanks to the zig-zags, is not unusually steep apart from in the initial stages. Apparently athlete Kenny Stuart holds the record for reaching the summit and back in 1hour 25minutes, we will be happy with anything under 5hours!

Scafell Pike, Lake District, England – The smallest in the challenge at 3210ft, but definitely the hardest. We will be taking the Wasdale route, shorter but steeper that other routes on the mountain. Mist can be a problem on Scafell Pike and poor navigation could cost us. We are looking at a target of 4hours up and down this one.

Snowdon, Wales – At 3560ft Snowdon, set in the beautiful Snowdonia National Park, will be our home run, or possible crawl! The suggested route is up Pyg Track to the café at the peak then down the Lanberis path to the bottom. It’s a well trodden route, but we will have well trodden feet by this stage and won’t take anything for granted. The target time top to bottom is 4hours.

The Team: Joseph Dumont, James Conway, Mark Snell, Stuart Kelly, Ray Harris, Tim Warner, Ross Beaton, Steve Harrison, Matt Driscoll, Paul Surridge, James Surridge, Richard Fucchi, Tim Manning (Driver), Paul Gregory (Driver)
